Pandemic's acute phase could end in 2022: WHO

According to the chief of the World Health Organization (WHO), the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic could end this year, if around 70% of the world’s population gets vaccinated.

WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said, "Our expectation is that the acute phase of this pandemic will end this year, of course with one condition, the 70% vaccination (target is achieved) by mid this year around June, July.” He added that it is in our hands and is not a matter of chance but a matter of choice.

The WHO chief was speaking during a visit to Afrigen Biologics and Vaccines, which has developed the first mRNA COVID-19 vaccine made in Africa making use of Modernas sequence. The vaccine is expected to be ready for clinical trials by the month of November, and an approval may come in 2024… (ET Healthworld – AFP, February 12, 2022)
